DEFINITION OF SOME WORDS_PART I

Aerodrome: A defined area on land or water (including any buildings, installations and equipment) intended to be used either wholly or in part for the arrival, departure and surface movement of aircraft.

Adequate Aerodrome: An aerodrome, which the Operator and the Authority consider to be adequate, having regard to the performance requirements applicable at the expected landing weight.
In particular, it should be anticipated that at the expected time of use:
• The aerodrome will be available, and equipped with the necessary ancillary services, such as ATS, aircraft rescue and fire-fighting services, sufficient lighting, communications, weather reporting, navaids and emergency services; and
• At least one approach aid will be available for an instrument approach.

Suitable Aerodrome: An adequate aerodrome with:
• Weather reports, or forecasts, or any combination thereof, indicating that the weather conditions are at or above operating minima, as specified in the operation specifications, and
• The field condition reports indicate that a safe landing can be accomplished at the time of the intended operation.

Aerodrome Elevation: The elevation of the highest point of the landing area.

Aeronautical Information Publication: A publication issued by or with the authority of a State and containing aeronautical information of a lasting character essential to air navigation.

Air Operator Certificate (AOC): A certificate authorizing an operator to carry out specified commercial air transport operations.

Air Traffic: All aircraft in flight or operating on the manoeuvring area of an aerodrome.

Air Traffic Control Clearance: Authorisation for an aircraft to proceed under conditions specified by an Air Traffic Control unit.

Air Traffic Service: A generic term meaning variously, flight information service, alerting service, air traffic advisory service, air traffic control service (area control service, approach control service or aerodrome control service).

Aircraft: In this manual, aircraft means an airplane, balloon, airship, glider or any similar apparatus that can derive support in the atmosphere from the reactions of the air.

Airway: A control area or portion thereof established in the form of a corridor equipped with radio navigation aids.

Alternate Aerodrome: An aerodrome to which an aircraft may proceed when it becomes either impossible or inadvisable to proceed to or to land at the aerodrome of intended landing.

Alternate aerodromes include the following:
Take-off Alternate: An alternate aerodrome at which an aircraft can land should this become necessary shortly after take-off and it is not possible to use the aerodrome of departure.
En-route Alternate: An aerodrome at which an aircraft would be able to land after experiencing an abnormal or emergency condition while enroute.
Destination Alternate: An alternate aerodrome to which an aircraft may proceed should it become impossible or inadvisable to land at the aerodrome of intended landing.
Note: The aerodrome from which a flight departs may also be an en-route or a destination alternate aerodrome for that flight.
Altitude: The vertical distance of a level, a point or an object considered as a point, measured from the mean sea level (MSL).

Appropriate Authority:
Regarding flight over the high seas: the relevant authority of the State of Registry. Regarding flight other than over the high seas: the relevant authority of the State having sovereignty over the territory being overflow.
Apron: A defined area, on a land aerodrome, intended to accommodate aircraft for purposes of loading or unloading passengers, mail or cargo, fuelling, parking or maintenance.
Area Navigation (RNAV): A method of navigation that permits aircraft operations on any desired course within the coverage of station-reference navigation signals, or within the limits of self contained system capability, or a combination of these.
Note: Area navigation includes performance-based navigation as well as other operations that do not meet the definition of performance-based navigation.
ATS Route: A specified route designed for channelling the flow of traffic as necessary for the provision of Air Traffic Services.
Note: The term "ATS Route" is used to mean variously airway, advisory route, controlled or uncontrolled route, arrival or departure route, etc.
Authority: The competent body responsible for the safety of civil aviation in the state of the applicant or operator.

Base (Flight) Training: Flight training required by Airworthiness Authorities to obtain the aircraft type rating.

Call-sign: Letters, numbers or words used for identification purposes.

Captain: Commander.

Commander: The pilot designated by Bassaka Air to be in command of the aircraft.

Configuration Deviation List (CDL): A list established by the organization responsible for the type design with the approval of the State of Design which identifies any external parts of an aircraft type which may be missing at the commencement of a flight, and which contains, where necessary, any information on associated operating limitations and performance correction.

Control Area: Controlled airspace extending upwards from a specified limit above the earth.

Controlled Airspace: An airspace of defined dimensions within which air traffic control service is provided to IFR flights and to VFR flights in accordance with the airspace classification.

Controlled Flight: Any flight which is subject to an air traffic control clearance.

Cruising Level: A level maintained during a significant portion of a flight.

Danger Area: Airspace of defined dimensions within or above which activities represent danger to the flight of aircraft.

Dangerous Goods: Articles or substances which are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, property or the environment when transported by air and which are classified according to ICAO Technical Instructions.

Decision altitude/height (DA/H): A specified altitude or height (A/H) in the precision approach at which a missed approach must be initiated if the required visual reference to continue the approach has not been established.

Filed Flight Plan: The flight plan as filed with an ATS unit by the pilot or his designated representative, without any subsequent changes.

Final Approach: Part of an instrument approach procedure which commences at the specified final approach fix or point, or, where such a fix or point is not specified:
• At the end of the last procedure turn, base or inbound turn of racetrack procedure, if specified; or
• At the point of interception of the track specified in the approach procedure and ends at a point in the vicinity of an aerodrome from which landing can be made or a missed approach procedure is initiated.
